1. Meiosis reduces chromosome number and rearranges genetic information.
A. Explain how the reduction and rearrangement are accomplished in meiosis.
B. Several human disorders occur as a result of defects in the meiosis process. Identify ONE such chromosomal abnormality; what effects does it have on the phenotype of people with the disorder? Describe how this abnormality could result from a defect in meiosis.
C. Production of offspring by parthenogenesis or cloning bypasses the typical process. Describe either parthenogenesis or cloning and compare the genomes of the offspring with those of the parents.


2. Discuss three of the following phenomena in which sex chromosomes are involved with particular reference to their significance or consequences in humans.
a. Sex determination
b. Sex-linked inheritance
c. Formation of Barr bodies (sex chromatin)
d. Variation in kinds and numbers of sex chromosomes


3. Describe in detail the process of meiosis as it occurs in an organism with a diploid chromosome number of 4 (2n = 4). Include labeled diagrams in your discussion. Indicate when and how each of the following occurs in meiosis:
a. Crossing over
b. Nondisjunction


4. An organism is heterozygous at two genetic loci on different chromosomes.
